November Update

I haven’t been spending much time in the garden. On the weekdays I leave just as the sun is rising and by the time I get home it is set. I have gotten to see some beautiful sunrises though.

Most things in the garden are no longer producing anything edible. I need to get around to cleaning it up, but I haven’t found a good moment for that. It’s still a nice place to sit. Besides, some of the plants that flowered are nice decoration!

We have gotten a few small harvests recently including some peas and beans. Neither were at their best though. The peas had tougher shells than they did in the spring.

We are both in our busiest seasons at work, so for the most part we’ve been keeping the cooking pretty simple. We made some delicious grilled cheese sandwiches for a weekend lunch.

We did take a Peruvian cooking class one night and took on some more complicated recipes. Our group was in charge of the humitas which are similar to tamales. They weren’t actually finished in time to eat them during the class, so we took some home for lunch the next day.


Though this picture may not look appetizing, they were actually delicious. The filling is made up of corn puree, cornmeal, pork, boiled eggs, olives, peppers, and herbs.

I also tried out a new recipe from 101 Cookbooks last week: Lemony Olive Oil Banana Bread. We had a number of bananas that were a bit too ripe to eat, which meant it was time for banana bread. This is really more of a cake than a bread. The glaze on top was delicious, but it would have been too much sugar for breakfast.

Today’s adventure was a pear and avocado smoothie. I’d never tried avocado in a smoothie, but I had heard good things from some smoothie aficionados. I looked at some recipes for inspiration and then adjusted as I went along. These are the ingredients I ened up with: 1/2 avocado, 1 pear, 1/2 cup of milk, 3 ice cubes, 1 tsp water, 1/2 tsp sugar. It was delicious- creamy and refreshing!
