Cooking Day Part I: Peach Kuchen

Yesterday was my first full day home this month, and I took advantage of the opportunity to do some cooking. I began by making a trip to the Union Square farmers’ market. At this time of year, there is so much to choose from. I knew some of the things I wanted and also picked up a few other things that caught my attention.

One of the things I was looking for was peaches. I’ve been wanting to try my grandmother’s recipe for peach kuchen. Peach kuchen is somewhere between a pie, a tart, and a cake. Even though I had eaten it many times, I had no idea what was in it. This is what I learned: The bottom layer is mostly flour and butter with some sugar, salt, and baking soda. On top of that are peach halves sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. The last layer is a mixture of egg yolks and sour cream.

The recipe was pretty simple, but I was nervous that the final product wouldn’t live up to the peach kuchen in my memory. I was quite pleased with the way it turned out, though. The bottom layer was a bit more crumbly than I remembered, but all of the flavors were there and the unique texture of the custard and peaches on top was right on.
