First Tomatoes

July 5, 2011

Exciting news this week: we have ripening tomatoes! We ate our first two cherry tomatoes yesterday. They were delicious. Two of the four tiny tim plants are about half green and half orange. This variety is determinate which means it tends to produce all of its fruit at once. I expect we’ll be eating a lot of cherry tomatoes over the next week. The full-size cherry tomato plant, the roller coaster variety, is also starting to ripen.

Other plants continue to produce fruit. In particular, there are a lot of cucumbers on the way. We harvested 1 yesterday, and I expect we’ll have about 5 more before the week is up. Other recent harvests include more lettuce, purple beans, and (of course) basil. We’re debating whether it is time to pick the broccoli. There isn’t too much of it, but the flower buds are getting big.

Don’t know if I mentioned, but we always used to get a huge basil harvest. My mother would simply make a huge patch of pesto, divide it into small containers and use it in the winter. Works every time!
