First Harvest

April 29, 2011

Yesterday we made our first harvest! Ten mesclun mix leaves. We decided not to obscure their flavor with any dressing and just munched on them as an appetizer. I rarely take the time to focus so much attention on a single lettuce leaf, but with a small (but special) pile of leaves I took the time to savor the unique flavor of each individual.

My other recent garden project has been trying to get the peas to attach to the string trellis I set up. I’ve had success with a few but the wind from all the storms has been making my job more difficult. All of the plants, whether or not they have attached to the trellis, have made close and quite tangled friendships with their neighbors. We’ve tried to research whether this is a problem but to no avail.

Looking forward to a weekend of transplanting. The broccoli, bok choi, and some of the tomatoes are looking ready for new and much bigger homes.
