Winter Sowing

April 25, 2011

January 15th:

The first seeds we sowed were all from wintersown.org. They included 8 types of tomatoes, spinach, and basil. Winter sowing involves planting seeds in mini-greenhouses, placing them outside, and then waiting for them to sprout. The idea is that they will know when it is the right time. The sprouts then grow into seedlings in their containers before being ready to transplant. We used recycled milk, soda, and lettuce containers to create the greenhouses.

The first seeds began to sprout in March. The first to sprout were Lorelay Spinach, Tiny Tim Tomatoes, and Toscano Basil. These are the sprouts in in mid-March.
