Vacation: Germany

We just returned from a wonderful spring break trip to Germany. Our first stop on the trip was Freiburg to visit our friend who lives there. From there we drove to Munich, stopping for one night on Hohenswangau to see the Neuschwanstein Castle.

While most of our vacations have been to visit friends residing in distant lands, our second goal has been to eat delicious, new, interesting foods. We seek out the best of the local specialities with the help of online research, guidebooks (usually a multitude), suggestions from friends and B&B owners, luck, and perceptive eyes and noses seeking delicious smells and crowded eateries.

Below are some of the highlights of our most recent trip.

In order: Makeral sandwich, kaisserscharrn from Gastehause Isator, meat and cheese plate, country potatoes and kraut from a stand in the market, rhubarb cake, fried pasta and kraut, currywurst, bratwurst, flammkucken with white asparagus.

The ingredient we encountered the most was asparagus. There were stands selling white asparagus all over both the countryside and the city. Most restaurants had a special asparagus menu in addition to the regular selections. Rhubarb was also in season and common in dessert options.
